Entering the Ecological Age: Sustainability in the 21st Century City

"Human development is following a dangerously unsustainable path globally. Waves of investment in low and middle income countries are accelerating this problem because they are following an unsustainable model. Our urban areas and methods of food production consume land and non-renewable resources inefficiently. But we can do something to turn the situation around: we can move towards an ecological age."
-- Peter Head

Event Description

London Net Impact Professional Chapter is pleased to invite you to our latest event featuring a discussion by Arup´s director Peter Head on the topic of climate change adaptation and mitigation and the creation of a global framework to reach sustainable living conditions.

Peter will explore how the world can start to make the transition towards an "ecological age of civilization" by looking at how urban centres can be developed and retrofitted to increase resource efficiency whilst preserving or improving quality of life. He promotes ecological footprint analysis to move towards the goal of environmental sustainability, setting out a vision of life in a sustainable community of the future.

Following his early career in steel bridge construction, Peter has been a Director of Arup since 2004 where he leads the Planning and Integrated Urbanism business. Peter was appointed a Commissioner on the London Sustainable Development Commission in 2002, representing the construction sector. There he was a member of the group that drafted the new Sustainable Development Framework for London and led on a voluntary code of practice for sustainable planning, design and construction of London's built environment. He is project director for Dongtan and other Eco City projects in China. In 2008 he was awarded the prestigious Frank Whittle Medal.

The full report by Peter Head entitled Entering an Ecological Age: the Engineer's Role  is available at http://www.arup.com/Publications/Entering_an_Ecological_Age.aspx.
